  • Last week I asked if awareness could be learned and talked about being more aware of your surroundings. This week, it only makes sense, to talk about self-awareness. Self-awareness is often confused with consciousness. Consciousness is being aware of one's environment, body, and lifestyle. Self-awareness is the conscious knowledge of your own character, values, feelings, strengths/weaknesses, motives, desires, and impact on others. In a nutshell, self-awareness is the reason why your acting, saying, thinking the way you are, it is what drives you, behind the scenes. Self-awareness has two broad categories: internal (understanding of ourselves) and external (understanding how others view us). Someone who has high internal & high external self-awareness is considered to be genuinely aware: they know who they are, what they want, and seek out as well as value the input of others. Someone who has high internal & low external self-awareness is considered to be an introspector: they know who they are but don't challenge their own views or search for weaknesses by getting input from others. Someone who has low internal & low external self-awareness is considered to be a seeker: they don't know who they are or what they stand for or how others see them. Someone who has low internal & high external self-awareness is considered to be a pleaser: they are often so focused on appearing a certain way to others they overlook what matters to them. Which category are you and more importantly which category do you want to be? Take the time to truly understand yourself as well as understand how others see you, especially those who you care about. You deserve it and so do they!
